Reporting Requirement for Licensure or Certification in Nursing

Effective July 1, 2024, federal regulation requires institutions of higher education to make a determination whether a Title IV eligible academic program that leads to professional licensure or certification meets the educational requirements for licensure/certification in the U.S. State where the institution is located and the U.S. States where “distance education” students are located at the time of initial enrollment in the program, as well as U.S. States where the program is advertised as meeting such requirements, and if applicable, the U.S. State where students attest they intend to be licensed/certified.

The Nursing, AAS program at Genesee Community College is registered by the New York State Education Department and thus meets the educational requirements for licensure/certification for New York State.

The Nursing program at Genesee Community College requires in person attendance to our campus in Batavia, NY in order to complete the program.  If you reside outside NY state and/or are planning to be licensed in a state other than NY after completing your degree, please reach out to your program director to determine whether our program meets the standards of the chosen State.

How do I get started?

Once I meet the pre-requisites, how do I apply?

Once you have met the requirements to be considered for admission, in addition to submitting all necessary transcripts you must also file a Nursing Program Admissions Form. Please note: if you are not a current GCC student you must first complete an application to the college which can be done online.

Once I apply, when will I hear if I have been accepted or not?

Deadlines for application are February 1st for Fall term admission and September 1st for Spring term admission.

Notification of decision will be sent via mail on or about October 15th for Spring term admission and on or about March 15th for Fall term admission.

How many students do you admit? Do you admit once or twice a year?

We admit approximately 72 students each semester.

Do you have a waiting list and how long is it?

We keep a waiting list every semester which does not carry over from one semester to another. If you are on the waiting list for a particular semester and are not accepted, you must reapply for the following semester.

I have class credit from another college, will it transfer?

General education and science courses from another accredited college may transfer. Some courses, however, may not be equivalent. Each transcript is reviewed individually to determine what courses will transfer.

I went to another nursing school and would like to transfer to GCC. Does this mean I am starting over?

If you left in good standing (passing), you would need to meet all of the requirements prior to the semester in which you would like to enter. You must submit transcripts and all nursing course syllabi before a decision can be made as to where you would place in our program.

Most importantly, acceptance of transfer students is on a space-available basis. Unfortunately, GCC does not accept students who failed a nursing course in another program.

What expenses are associated with the program (besides tuition)?

You will have to purchase a uniform, lab supplies, an electronic handheld device (smart phone qualifies), and required textbooks. Prices will be reviewed during information sessions as well as at orientation for accepted students before the semester begins.

Can I take my classes at a Campus Center?

Pre-requisites and support courses are available at some campus centers. All nursing courses and nursing labs are at the Batavia campus.

Do you have Nursing classes in the evening or over the summer?

You can take prerequisite and support courses in the summer, but Nursing courses are only offered in the fall and spring.

Most classes are mornings or early afternoons, but there are clinical rotations that meet in the afternoon/evening.

Where can I go for clinical experience?

We have clinical sites all over the Western New York area such as Batavia, Rochester and Buffalo as well as between these major locations. While we do try to assign students within a reasonable distance from their homes, it is not always possible due to needed specialty populations for required clinical experience.

How many students are in a hospital group?

Each hospital group has one instructor and an average of 8 students

Can I start taking college courses if I am still in LPN school?

Yes, you can start taking the prerequisite courses you will need to complete in order to be considered for the program whenever you would like to, when it is convenient for your own schedule.

Will my courses from LPN school transfer to GCC?

Only college level courses will transfer as credit towards the AAS degree. Generally, LPN school courses do not transfer as college credit. However, upon successful completion of the program, LPNs are given credit for the first two semesters of Nursing coursework which is equivalent to 19 credit hours.

Why do I need to have so many courses completed before I can be admitted to the LPN-RN Advance Placement program?

Accepted LPN-RN students are entering the program as second year (third semester) Nursing students, which means every course that is required in the first two semesters (that is not a Nursing course) needs to be completed prior to applying to the program.

Can I apply to the Nursing program if I am still working on my pre-requisite courses?

No, you should determine when you will complete all the required courses in order to be eligible for admission. You should then apply to the program by the appropriate deadline.

What information do I need to send to GCC?

• Official high school transcripts
• Official College transcripts from ALL colleges previously attended
• LPN school transcripts
• A copy of your current LPN license

Submit this information directly to the Admissions Department.

When should I take NUR 128 and NUR 129?

The semester before you start the Nursing program (NUR211).

These courses are offered every spring/summer and every fall semester. Please note that you must first be conditionally accepted to the program in order to be registered in these courses. You cannot register for these courses yourself.

I tried to register for NUR 128 and NUR 129, but there is a restriction and I couldn’t register. What should I do?

Once you are conditionally accepted to the program and you confirm your intent to enroll, you will be registered for the courses by the Records department.

How long will it take me to complete the program?

The program is 1 year (2 semesters) long. When you enter the program (NUR 211), you will already have completed the pre-requisite courses, including NUR 128 and NUR 129.
